In Cantonese, Lingzhi or Reishi, is the name for one form of the mushroom Ganoderma Lucidum. Ganoderma lucidum (GL) is a traditional Chinese medicine known by the layman as the "herb of immortality". It was used as a health tonic to promote longevity for more than two thousand years. It has two major groups of bioactive components: polysaccharides and triterpenes. In the recent decade, they have been extensively studied because of its potential immunmodulating and anti-tumor effects as demonstrated in both in vitro and in vivo models. So far, currently available data suggested that GL polysacchrides exert anti-cancer functions indirectly by activation of host's immune responses whereas GL triterpenes can kill cancer cells directly via its direct cytotoxic effect. GL polysaccharides are purified from the mushroom mycelium.
